I always get depressed this time of year. Three years ago, Xander was placed on the United Network for Organ Sharing waiting list. I know the letter says the 26th (clerical error) but I got the call on the 25th saying we listed him today. The day your child is listed is one you never forget. It definitely was September 25 and ironically he had a Pediatric End-stage Liver Disease or PELD score of 25. That day was scary yet a relief. Scary in that it meant Xander's liver was dying and taking him with it but relieving because we could get a call any minute that would save his life. At least we weren't in limbo any more. We knew what had to happen next.
September 26th began our hospitalization to wait for his gift of a healthier life. He was admitted in respiratory distress. He had a pleural effusion over his right lung. He was sent to the Pediatric ICU to have it tapped and drained. They drained so much off his little lung.
This x-ray shows how cloudy (pleural effusion) it is over his right lung.
This is how his lung looked after they drained it! Almost clear.
This is how much they drained. No that is not urine ... the fluid on his lung was bright yellow from all the bile he had in his body.
After the tap. He hadn't woken up yet.
